How to spot early signs of battery degradation on your e-bike

If you've been out on the trails all season and that final mile home is starting to feel a little off, it might be time to check in on your e-bike's battery. Are you noticing a decrease in range or a quicker voltage drop when you're pushing it? What early warning signs do you watch for to catch battery fade before you're stranded?

One of the first signs I notice is voltage sag under load. If the battery meter drops from full to half right when I hit the throttle hard, it's a clear indication that the battery is nearing the end of its life. Plus, if charge times are getting shorter, that’s a sign the cells are losing their capacity quickly

A drop in range is pretty obvious, but it’s also important to monitor how hot the battery gets during regular riding.
If it’s heating up much more than before, that rising internal resistance means degradation is occurring quickly.
Honestly, that’s not a good situation to be in.

Keep an eye out for sudden power cuts when the battery is around 30% charge, especially if it used to run smoothly down to 10%.
That’s a sign the cells are becoming unbalanced and weak.
It's time to start looking for a replacement before the battery completely fails while you're riding.
