How to spot a failing controller before it shuts you down mid-ride

Lately, mine has been acting a bit off, there's been some hesitation and strange cutouts that last just a moment. It’s got me worried that it might completely fail on my next trail ride. What are the early warning signs you look for to catch a failing controller before it leaves you stranded miles away from your truck?
 
Make sure to check your firmware version, sometimes, those odd behaviors are more about the software than the hardware. Update it if you can before you assume the controller is done for. But if it’s really hot to the touch, smells burnt, or if the cutouts are happening more often, that’s a clear sign of a hardware failure on the horizon.

So, make sure you're prepared and carry at least some basic tools
 
If you're facing intermittent power cuts, it could be a sign of an early failure in your controller, like overheating or a weak solder joint that struggles when shaken up. Be sure to keep an eye on any error codes your system might show. Often, controllers will give you a heads-up before they completely fail.
 
When you’re experiencing random cutouts that seem to fix themselves, that’s often a sign something’s about to go wrong.
If you can, back up your settings and order a replacement while you've still got some functionality.

At this point, you’re riding on borrowed time, so don’t risk getting stranded.
 
After your rides, check how hot the controller housing gets. If it’s really warm, it might be entering thermal protection mode, leading to those cutouts. Also, inspect all connections for any corrosion or looseness. Poor connections can often imitate a failing controller, but the good news is that they’re usually cheaper to fix.
 
If you're noticing hesitation when under load, that likely means the controller is having a tough time keeping up with the current.
It could be due to failing MOSFETs or bad capacitors inside.
If it’s getting worse, it's best not to tempt fate, replace it before you find yourself having to carry the bike back.
