MX5 Pro gearbox noise

Hey guys! New owner here, just about 300 miles on my MX5 Pro.

I've been loving the power, but I’ve developed a weird noise and it's driving me crazy. When I’m cruising and then re-apply the throttle, or sometimes when I'm just coasting and the motor cuts in and out, I hear a distinct knocking sound coming from the mid-section, right around the gearbox. It's not a chain slap.. I've checked and tensioned that. It sounds more like something is moving or settling inside the casing.

Has anyone else on an MX5 Pro or even an MX4 experienced this? Is it just a regular Talaria gearbox noise or should I be pulling the cover and checking my motor mounts or gear oil level? Should I be worried about internal damage, or is this just the sound of the IPM motor engaging and disengaging with the gear drive? Hoping not to wreck my new toy.. Thanks for any insight!

If you’re experiencing knocking when reapplying the throttle, it might be due to loose motor mount bolts or a worn bushing on the gearbox output shaft. Start by checking the torque on the motor mount, as this is a common problem with new bikes. If everything’s tight there, take a look at the gearbox oil level and listen for any bearing noise. At just 300 miles, it’s unlikely that there’s any internal damage.
