How to maintain chain tension and reduce drivetrain wear

I’ve been noticing that my chain feels a little loose, and it’s making me paranoid about the wear on my sprockets and tensioners. I want to make sure I’m not that person who’s always fiddling with it or letting it get too loose and ruining expensive parts.

What’s your maintenance routine for keeping the chain tension in check?

Keep an eye on that tension every few rides, you want about half an inch of play in the middle.
If it’s too tight, it’ll wear out the bearings, too loose will damage sprockets.
Regular lubrication is key, too, dry chains stretch out way quicker.

A straightforward routine can save you from costly repairs later on.

Adjust it if you start hearing slapping or see a lot of sag. I check mine weekly and make quick adjustments as needed. It only takes about five minutes to do it right. Much cheaper than letting it go and needing new sprockets, trust me.

Don’t stress over it, but don’t ignore it, either. Do a visual check before each ride, if it looks saggy or sounds off, go ahead and tighten it. Keep it lubricated and clean. Finding that balance between being too cautious and too lax is important for making your parts last.
