Gear oil and coolant for work week rides + weekend trail runs

My coworker and I ride edirtbikes daily in SoCal and hit trails on weekends. He's diligent about maintenance, using premium chain lube and swapping the final drive gear oil often, while I've been using budget stuff from the parts store. He argues the higher quality fluids improve smoothness and extend component life.

For a bike used in both commuting and trail conditions, is it worth paying more for premium gear oil and coolant over basic alternatives?

I believe that using high-quality gear oil is really beneficial for handling tough trails since it offers better shear stability and film strength. While budget options are okay for daily commuting, they tend to wear out more quickly when pushed hard. As for coolant, it’s not as critical unless you’re experiencing overheating issues.

Basically, since I'm hitting the trails on the weekend, I need to run the premium gear oil full time to handle the toughest part of my riding. Looks like my coworker wins this debate.

From your experience, is the difference something you can actually feel in smoothness day to day or is it more of a long term wear and tear benefit that just gives you peace of mind?

I couldn't say I noticed a huge difference in how smooth things feel from one day to the next, but trust me, using premium oil can make a big impact. It really helps cut down on that annoying gear chatter, especially when you're pushing it hard. And yeah, at the end of the day, it’s all about peace of mind and making sure your ride lasts longer. That’s the real victory!

Thanks for clarifying. So the real benefit is quieting down the gear noise when you're pushing it, not necessarily a smoother commute.
