Checking motor temp after a hard ride

You come back from a tough ride, and your bike is pretty warm, but the app isn’t giving you any temp data, leaving you in the dark. How can you check the motor temp without onboard telemetry? You might try the touch test, use an IR gun, keep track of the cooldown time, or come up with something a bit smarter.

I learned the hard way once, so now I use an IR gun and a timer. I compare temps on the same ride in the same conditions. It's not fancy stuff, but it keeps things steady and my hands safe.

I usually wait for it to cool down and then touch it carefully.
If it takes ages to cool down or gets super hot really fast, I know I went too far.

Last summer, after one tough climb, I snagged a cheap IR temp gun, and it's been great. A quick scan of the motor case gives me a good idea of what's up, so I don't have to guess with my fingers anymore.
